Rocket Royale is an online gaming community centered around the video game Rocket League. The community was created to bring players together for recreational and competitive play, with the goal of becoming a hub for Rocket League players of all ranks or skill levels. Additionally, Rocket Royale hosts daily events centered around fun gameplay, building strong relationships and connections between players.

After previously working with the owner of Rocket Royale on another project, I was hired to rebrand the community and create animations for their Discord server.

The project began with designing logo concepts. Considering the community is centered around Rocket League, I took inspiration from the game’s rank system. As the ranks progress, the symbols become wing-like badges. The other symbols involved are a crown—representing excellence and the competitive aspect of the brand—the brand’s initials “RR,” and a diamond tied directly to the owner’s personal branding—which I had designed the previous year. The combination of these symbols frame Rocket Royale as a professional community for players to connect and play competitively or recreationally in Rocket League.

The key contributing factor for the color palette and typography was Rocket League itself. I chose blue and a font similar to Rocket League’s branding to maintain the connection between the brand and the game. Additionally, the blue represents professionalism and trust, while the purple represents wisdom and creativity, all of which are core values of the brand.

Once the logo concept and variants were created, I began storyboarding the logo animation. The core concept of this animation began with a grand entrance with glowing lines outlining the logo. Additionally, the motion of the different shapes resemble a magnet connecting the diamond and the initials, “ЯR.” Once the logomark was built, I wanted to emphasize the wing-like shape that connects the logo to the rank system in Rocket League. To do so, I animated the R’s to lift up as if they were wings.

After the core logo animation was completed, the client requested variations for Christmas and Breast Cancer Awareness month, which they could swap in when it was appropriate. The Christmas variant allowed me to expand on creativity, integrating a winter landscape and santa hat that sits on top of the logo, whereas the Breast Cancer Awareness variation relied more on color and symbolism.
